The loss of a ‘soldier’

Ann and I were saddened to hear of the untimely death of our friend, Jon Lundin. What a tremendous loss!

I met Jon 30 years ago when I first moved to Rockford. I sought his wise counsel in many of the issues I dealt with in public life. He had a formidable mind, a compassionate heart, an insatiable intellectual curiosity and a wry sense of humor. He was a repository of local history and had an astute sense of the community psyche.

Soldier, scholar, humanitarian, chronicler, teacher, entrepreneur; all these labels applied to Jon. However, what most stood out to those of us who were blessed to know him was the goodness of his soul.

I was fortunate to spend a few minutes of time chatting with him in January when I returned to visit. My sincere condolences go out not only to Gloria and his family, but also to the entire city. You have lost a gigantic community asset.
